How to Fix a Passport or ID Photo Background at Home

ID applications reject photos for background problems more than anything else. Here is how to get a compliant plain background without a studio.

Most ID photo rejections come down to the background: a shadow on the wall, a patterned curtain, or a colour that does not match the requirement. The photo itself is usually fine.

What the requirement usually is

Rules vary by country, but plain white and plain light blue cover most applications. Check your issuing authority before you print, since some also specify head height as a percentage of the frame.

Getting it right at home

  • Stand about a metre away from the wall so your own shadow does not fall on it.
  • Face a window. Even, indirect daylight beats a flash, which creates a hard shadow behind the head.
  • Neutral expression, both ears visible, no glasses glare.

Then swap the background

Run the photo through the background remover and apply a solid white or blue layer. Because the cutout preserves hair detail, the result avoids the cardboard-cutout look that gets applications rejected. Print at the exact dimensions your application specifies.
